Summary:

The Town of Nassau has built a biodiversity assessment capability with local residents.

Body:

Five residents of the Town of Nassau have been a part of a 10 month Biodiversity Assessment Training Team. The team is made up of members of the Town's Natural Resources Committee, the Comprehensive Planning and Zoning Committee, the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals.

The training included building map interpretation skills, as well as other exercises that will help the members of the team predict the occurrence of ecologically significant habitats. The class also identified and assessed various habitats during field trips. The goal of the training was to give land-use decision makers the skills to be able to develop conservation strategies for land use planning. The training began in February and the group is currently working on their final written report, complete with a detailed habitat map. The Town received a $1,000 grant to purchase maps and other equipment necessary to complete the training. The training is sponsored by Hudsonia Ltd., in partnership with NYSDEC's Hudson River Estuary Program and has been taught by Hudsonia staff.
